Resumen

Objectives. To meet the global and European challenges of reducing the GHG emissions from the construction sector, Build-in-Wood will develop a sustainable and innovative wood value chain for the construction of multi-storey wood buildings. The ambition of the project is to make optimised and cost effective wood construction methods common practice in the European construction sector. The objectives include: 1) To make wood a natural choice of building material for the construction of multi-storey buildings, 2) To decrease GHG-emissions of the European building sector, 3) To establish an innovative and sustainable European value chain for multi-storey wood buildings, 4) To improve the connection between rural and urban areas and to contribute to sustainable urbanisation, 5) To increase productivity of the European building sector.

Build-in-Wood will address this challenge through innovative development of materials and components as well as structural systems and façade elements for multi-storey wood buildings fit for both new construction and retrofitting. Developments will be tested, piloted and fully documented for immediate market uptake. Active engagement of selected cities will strengthen the urban-rural connections. The project aims to lay the foundation for the solutions developed to be usable upon its completion for full scale construction projects.

What is an Early Adopter City? To understand and overcome individual barriers implementing Build-in-Wood solutions, seven very different European cities have been selected as Early Adopter Cities. They range from capital metropoles to mid-size and small mountain cities, making one thing clear: Any city can decide to build in wood and benefit from it. The Early Adopter Cities take a leading role in the project, receiving detailed context analyses, workshops and implementation support from the Consortium and Advisory Board. Their stories shall inspire cities around the world to rethink construction and social responsibility. They include: Brasov, Romania; Trento, Italy; Innsbruck, Austria; Copenhagen, Denmark; Trondheim, Norway; London, United Kingdom; Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Results, outcomes and impacts. 1) Optimised materials (resource-efficient, enhanced qualities), 2) Development of a structural, customisable building system platform as well as guidelines for incorporation of ICT tools in the design process, 3) Performance and environmental documentation of developed materials, systems and solutions (e.g. LCA, LCC, S-LCA), 4) Demonstration projects, 5) Stakeholder co-creation and scenario building workshops in selected European cities, 6) Training for entrepreneurs, SMEs and researchers, 7) An open source design guide (for private clients and local/ national authorities), 8) Overview and evaluation of relevant legislation, public regulations and standards, 9) Model for enhancement of rural-urban connection.

The project thus foster the following impacts: 1) Reduction of GHG emissions through increased use of the sustainable, resource- and energy-efficient material wood, 2) A rising demand for forest-based construction products will provide incentives for expanding and maintaining forests, 3) Creating economic opportunities and new ways of using wood and nature-based materials in construction sector, 4) Increase of innovation in the building industry (materials, building systems and processes), 5) Higher quality of buildings (including health and indoor climate, 6) Green and decent jobs in rural and urban areas through a sustainable wood value chain.

The Build-in-Wood consortium, coordinated by the Danish Technological Institute, consists of 21 partners from 11 different countries, covering the entire wood value chain from factory to final construction. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 862820.

Resumen

The aim of the project was to work out the complex method of defining selected forest stand descriptions as well as aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration, based on the use of remote sensing for the purposes of forest management planning.

Among main goals were:

  • acquisition and processing of remote sensing, laboratory and field data,
  • determining the amount of biomass and carbon in the forest based on radar data,
  • development of methods for the inventory of selected stand descriptions, growing stock and biomass with the use of active remote sensing techniques,
  • local correction of dendrometric volume equations based on terrestrial laser scanning data (TLS),
  • development of the merchantable volume conversion factors into biomass and carbon.

Results of the project allow to: reduce time needed to carry out the work of the forest management, especially inventory of growing stock; obtain higher accuracy of the CO2 balance, biomass and annual allowable cut calculations; determine growing stock for any forest area; reduce cost of field work in forest management.

Ukrainian start-up produces sustainable paper products from fallen leaves
Solución digital

Resumen

Production of paper from fallen leaves.
RE-leaf scales the process of pulp production, which is based on the use of fibre from fallen leaves and in the future other types of fibre from agricultural waste. RE-leaf significantly reduced energy consumption due to a simplified method of fibre extraction, water consumption was reduced by 15 times and all processes are based on the use of chemical reagents free of sulfates, sulfites and chlorine, compared to conventional pulp production processes. The product created brings what was once considered waste back into the economic cycle and is itself recyclable. This provides RE-leaf customers with a guarantee that the company is not sourcing from controversial sources.
RE-leaf PAPER is made of fallen leaves coming to the enterprise from cities. This makes it possible to solve the problem of the utilization of plant waste in the urban ecosystem and preserve the integrity of forest ecosystems.
Started in 2017 as idea of the Ukrainian school pupil Valentyn Frechka, in 2019 a patent was obtained for the technology of recycling leaves with the subsequent production of paper. In 2020 RE-Leaf PAPER Research and Production Enterprise Limited Liability Company was set up, it moved from the laboratory to an industrial enterprise. The company was included in the list of members of the Enterprise Europe Network.
The products include:
- Re-leaf paper
- Re-leaf bag - leaf fibre combined with waste paper
- Re-leaf trays for packaging of food

Climafor is a method and a software under development that allows the comparison of carbon balances from two silvicultural itineraries. It takes into account carbon sequestration in the forest, storage in wood products and the substitution effects generated by the use of wood (material or energy).
Solución digital

Resumen

Taking into account the carbon issue in forest management is becoming more and more important in France, giving rise to research and development projects. The Climafor software responds to a challenge: to make carbon calculations easier to access and less time consuming. The data sources used (production tables, calculation coefficients) are now well known. Climafor integrates them into a single tool, which does not require any special training. The calculations are instantaneous and the results can be used directly in a forest carbon project. The calculations made by the software are based on production tables for each species and different coefficients from research. The software will be continuously improved by updating the different parameters and adding new tables. For the moment, it is being developed by the IDF (Institute of Forestry Development), the R&D branch of the CNPF.

Resumen

Applications like forest inventory and forestry planning, planning of fellings, optimization of harvesting and accounting processes, improvements of timber logistic, evaluation of damaging events etc. are expecting a realistic virtual illustration of the real forest. Within this project the preconditions for building up a single central database – the Virtual Forest - describing the extensive area of North Rhine-Westphalia are constructed. This database contains a mathematical description of biological and technical aspects of the real forest in different detailing (e.g. forest and single-tree consideration) and different precision. Apart from available terrestrial data and a digital site classification, developed by the Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW, the Virtual Forest is based on remote sensing data and information derived thereof. It applies newly developed algorithms on well-known data formats: for single tree identification laser data and aerial images are used, tree species classification uses images and area segmentation is based on raster and vector data. Thus, a comprehensive survey ranging from inventory to forest growth to logistics can be provided. The Virtual Forest provides all stored data in a new 4D geo-data infrastructure while using standardised interfaces. All data (basic data, derived data, technical data, etc.) can also be used by third (programmes, users). Furthermore, a meta-data catalogue answers questions as “Which data of a certain area and/or to a specific subject are placed in which format, which exactness and which actuality at what costs at which place?” Appropriate safety concepts secure the data access as well as the data itself. The consequent consideration of the factor “time” transforms the 2D- or rather 3D- into a 4D-GIS based on a 4D geo-data infrastructure – the basis for a “time machine”. This enables the user to look at the forest at different (historical or future) conditions. The Virtual Forest serves as a foundation for abstracts of different economy units, which are from case to case both business and economically profitable, and with it for the management of larger amounts of wood at lower costs.
