Objectives. The core idea is to enable the construction of a mid-sized building with the lowest possible surface of forest area. A series of innovative bio-based materials, products and constructive systems are jointly developed and tested by companies and researchers. A digital framework of the 'forest to building' chain and several regional innovation roadmaps are set up to explore how wood construction can create benefits for rural areas. The special feature of the project is that it integrates the full value chain: all steps from forestry, wood processing, intermediate manufacturing and building are included, to establish the link from raw materials in rural areas up to the high-end products in the urban environment. The activities of the project can be grouped into three main topics: 1. Rural development, 2. Sustainable wood construction, and 3. Digitalization and innovation.

R&D aproach. The project partners develop and test innovative materials, products, building systems and supply chain solutions for manufacturers and end users. The proof points for industrial end users and customers include a full record of the product’s technological and sustainability characteristics, productivity, cost efficiency and competitiveness, and their demonstration in the form of two full scale demo buildings realised in operational settings. The aim is to exploit 100% of the raw materials obtained from harvested wood (i.e. solid wood, fibres, veneers, bark, sawdust, etc.) and create a building that is as much as possible based in products and sub-products from all these materials. This goal is challenging but can deliver convincing evidence that sustainable wood construction is ready to tackle three global challenges at the same time: 1. mitigation of GHG emissions of the construction sector, 2. development of sustainable high-value materials and products for urban customers, and 3. strengthening of rural development and employment.

Main outcomes. 1) Several guidance reports about building with wood addressing a holistic value chain including LCA, recyclability and eco-design of novel building products and systems, 2) Studies on wood as driver for sustainable development in Europe's rural regions, 3) A 'Forest to Building Digital Framework' (F2BDF) as digital twin of the whole value chain, 4) A series of innovative bio-based materials, products and constructive systems, including thermoplastic composites, WPC foams, waterborne coatings with fire-proof properties, structural components, structural insulation panels, façade, interior partitions and roof prototypes, etc., 5) Two full-scale demo buildings integrating these innovations, in France and in Finland, 6) A regional innovation platform for upscaling results with companies and stakeholders.

Coordinated by Tecnalia in Spain, the consortium comprises 29 partners from 12 countries including 14 companies, 12 research organizations and universities, and 3 other public and sectoral organizations. The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 862942 from 2019-2023.

Forestry (WiF) was established in 1986 by women studying and working in forestry. The purpose was to increase awareness among women to claim their right to inherit the family forest, and to work for women to be an active and skilled part of the forestry, as well as to build a strong and supportive network between women. Today, the members of WiF are students, forestry workers, forest owners - including former and future owners - supporters and various organisations within forestry or women's rights, and the organisation works with both forestry and gender equality. The activities include building both knowledge and network among the members and other women, by activities such as women crash courses in forestry, field days for immigrant women and annual Forest Conferences with various topics, as well as activities aimed at building knowledge in the society and the forestry, e.g. by participating in audit of the Norwegian PEFC Forest standard to ensure gender equality in both the working group and the revised standard, and other projects on both national and international scales. WiF reaches out to their members and other audience through the use of Facebook and Instagram, as well as their own podcast "Sound of Forestry", where the guests are mainly women, with an "everyday language" to reach also people without knowledge of forestry. The organisation is funded by membership fees, project fundings, governmental grants, sponsorship and sales of consulting services.

The Digital Sawmill is a project is funded by Vinnova and the participating companies Moelven Industrier, RemaSawco, Schneider Electric, RISE and DigiWood. The aim of the project was to, by digitizing the sawmill's production and process data, increase the process efficiency by 15%, increase the product value by 10% and reduce energy consumption by 10%. Digitization is a complicated project that takes time and requires resources. It is essential to focus on the goals set. Careful planning is required of: plant inventory, installation in stages, demanding deployment with parallel systems for new automated connections. Digitization projects start with details, continue with details and even more detail, with clear goals of a result of shaping a unified unit. Massive skills challenge. Visualize more, with less monitoring screens.Take control of data flows and take ownership of your own data.Platforms that handle data need to be tested in a harsh environment before. Different systems that measure time, energy or dimension need to be synchronized onsite, and with periodicity calibrated against "approved" similar.Traceability in saw lines can be achieved with redundant systems that measure length with the addition of timestamp. A calculation shows a potential increase in value of approximately SEK 5 million per year.

Objectives. To meet the global and European challenges of reducing the GHG emissions from the construction sector, Build-in-Wood will develop a sustainable and innovative wood value chain for the construction of multi-storey wood buildings. The ambition of the project is to make optimised and cost effective wood construction methods common practice in the European construction sector. The objectives include: 1) To make wood a natural choice of building material for the construction of multi-storey buildings, 2) To decrease GHG-emissions of the European building sector, 3) To establish an innovative and sustainable European value chain for multi-storey wood buildings, 4) To improve the connection between rural and urban areas and to contribute to sustainable urbanisation, 5) To increase productivity of the European building sector.

Build-in-Wood will address this challenge through innovative development of materials and components as well as structural systems and façade elements for multi-storey wood buildings fit for both new construction and retrofitting. Developments will be tested, piloted and fully documented for immediate market uptake. Active engagement of selected cities will strengthen the urban-rural connections. The project aims to lay the foundation for the solutions developed to be usable upon its completion for full scale construction projects.

What is an Early Adopter City? To understand and overcome individual barriers implementing Build-in-Wood solutions, seven very different European cities have been selected as Early Adopter Cities. They range from capital metropoles to mid-size and small mountain cities, making one thing clear: Any city can decide to build in wood and benefit from it. The Early Adopter Cities take a leading role in the project, receiving detailed context analyses, workshops and implementation support from the Consortium and Advisory Board. Their stories shall inspire cities around the world to rethink construction and social responsibility. They include: Brasov, Romania; Trento, Italy; Innsbruck, Austria; Copenhagen, Denmark; Trondheim, Norway; London, United Kingdom; Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Results, outcomes and impacts. 1) Optimised materials (resource-efficient, enhanced qualities), 2) Development of a structural, customisable building system platform as well as guidelines for incorporation of ICT tools in the design process, 3) Performance and environmental documentation of developed materials, systems and solutions (e.g. LCA, LCC, S-LCA), 4) Demonstration projects, 5) Stakeholder co-creation and scenario building workshops in selected European cities, 6) Training for entrepreneurs, SMEs and researchers, 7) An open source design guide (for private clients and local/ national authorities), 8) Overview and evaluation of relevant legislation, public regulations and standards, 9) Model for enhancement of rural-urban connection.

The project thus foster the following impacts: 1) Reduction of GHG emissions through increased use of the sustainable, resource- and energy-efficient material wood, 2) A rising demand for forest-based construction products will provide incentives for expanding and maintaining forests, 3) Creating economic opportunities and new ways of using wood and nature-based materials in construction sector, 4) Increase of innovation in the building industry (materials, building systems and processes), 5) Higher quality of buildings (including health and indoor climate, 6) Green and decent jobs in rural and urban areas through a sustainable wood value chain.

The Build-in-Wood consortium, coordinated by the Danish Technological Institute, consists of 21 partners from 11 different countries, covering the entire wood value chain from factory to final construction. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 862820.

Heat entrepreneurs produce heat for customers by using renewable solid bio-fuels. In recent decades this operational model has become more common in Finland. Different skill sectors have formed around heat entrepreneurship such as training, research, consultation and equipment production. A heat entrepreneurship knowledge cluster has been built in South Ostrobothnia Finland.

The HECSO development project has assembled the heat entrepreneurship knowledge cluster of South Ostrobothnia. The knowledge cluster has been made to utilise, in many different ways, the companies located in the region, other actors in the region and the internationalisation of the whole province.
A principal component of internationalisation is the knowledge cluster’s training package on heat entrepreneurship, which is on offer to interested foreign target groups. Vocational Adult Education Sedu is responsible for the training. The training package lasts for one week, and is compiled through co-operation with the Finnish Forest Centre and regional heat entrepreneurs and machine and equipment manufacturers.
Heat entrepreneurship is the production of local renewable energy, where an entrepreneur or company sells heat at an agreed price to a user. In the best scenarios there can be many heat purchasers. Heat is conveyed to the customer from the heating plant by a district heating network. Generally the fuel is the entrepreneur’s own forest or locally procured wood, but it can also be wood refining by-products, wood for re-cycling and peat.

The knowledge cluster consists of heat entrepreneurs, heat entrepreneurship units, research, training and the supply of machines and equipment for the whole production chain. The knowledge cluster can also be utilized internationally by offering knowledge and training opportunities to foreign target groups.
