Abstrakt

Action plan “Wood is beautiful” is an operational document for increasing the competitiveness of the entire forest-wood value chain. The document defines wood as a strategic raw material of Slovenia, which has a lot of unexploited potential. The action plan sets out the objectives, measures, indicators and deadlines for intensifying forest management and for the revitalization and development of wood processing and the energy use of its residues. Due to the interdependence between all individual areas, all the measures foreseen should be implemented. This way the document can contribute to the competitiveness of the entire forest-wood chain, job creation and high added value in the Slovenian wood processing industry. Key objectives of the action plan are to create a market for timber products and services, to increase forest management and conservation in line with forest management plans, to increase the amount and processing of timber at higher levels of difficulty with new technologies, to create new jobs and growth in added value per employee in the wood processing industry. The action plan again places Slovene wood processing industry among strategically important and promising industries with a sufficient amount of domestic raw material.

Abstrakt

The significant increase in the number of forestry contractors in last few years has been increasing competition, however at the same time requires a reflection on the objective quality of contractors. In sustainable management of forests, the criterion for the selection of contractor should not be only the lowest service price, but it should include also environmental, social and business aspects of the relationship between the client and the contractor. Platform MojGozdar (MyForester) enables the integration of all stakeholders in the forest-wood value chain, including providers of forestry services, users of services (forest owners, forest managers) and administrators of basic data bases about business entities. It is a transparent and objective web-based information system for assessing the suitability of contractors, who perform work in the forest. The methodology for evaluating is consisted of an automatic assessment of the formal suitability of the forestry contractors and direct evaluation of the service by consumers.

OHS is part of the international network Open House Worldwide, which operates in more than 35 cities around the world. The OHS is available to the general public, who can enter and test the buildings, get in contacts with the owners and the experts. At the same time it is also intended to promote top experts working in the field of design, design, procurement, construction, operation, maintenance and use of buildings.

Making good architecture is by no means easy. Nowadays it is challenging also in terms of the speed of orders and the advancement of technology. Good architecture is not fashionable, it is one that will be good regardless of the changes brought about by time. In this, the user will feel good, respectful to the environment and sustaining throughout the life cycle.

All the buildings showcased during OHS festivals are presented in the largest network of Slovene architecture. Over the years the largest and constantly expanding collection of contemporary Slovene architecture has been built. In the collection there are over 160 objects where wood has been used as a prevailing material for construction or indoor equipment.  OHS encourages the awareness that buildings are made for long periods, therefore their operation, energy consumption and the right choice of materials are important for a sustainable and conscious social and economic development.

Abstrakt

Since Harghita County is rich in wood source, the main aim of this policy is to encourage and promote the use of wood in constructions first of all at the level of public buildings but to enlarge it on business and household level. This successful implementation project from Harghita County we are going to expand this approach on national level in Romania. This policy approach should be taken into account at in other regions of Romania as well. 52% of Harghita County’s turnover is given by forest management and wood processing. 35.6 % of the County’s surface is covered by forest, 47% of these forests are owned by local forest owner associations, the rest being owned by private owners and local public authorities, churches and state. The most important lessons from this best practice is the consciousness and endurance of the local stakeholders. The policy aims to identify how forests can provide new jobs and business opportunities in order to keep rural communities alive. Beside the fact of strengthening the idea of traditional use of wood, there is a need to create new, competitive wooden products with high added value. In order to protect the local wood processing based industry the policy of County Council does not allow the establishment of international investors who would like to exploit the county’s natural resources without adding high value added activity on local level. Taking into account that at this moment there isn’t any big company, investor in the field of silviculture and forestry establish in the county this is already a positive impact of the policy.

Abstrakt

Silvicultural approach that early selects a limited number of target trees to which ensure a free and harmonious development of crown and trunk. The thinnings are selective or from above and they are oriented to remove the direct competitors of the target trees, preserving the remaining stand. The target trees are chosen as a function of vigor, stability, tree morphology, spatial distribution. The number of released target trees (from 50 to 120 per hectare) depends on the site characteristics, the species, the biotic and abiotic risks, the type of owner, the silvicultural goal. · This approach can be applied in high forests and in coppices, in conifers (as Pinus nigra and Pseudotsuga Douglasii) and broad-leaved species, to social (Fagus sylvatica and Quercus sp.) and valuable (Castanea sativa) or sporadic tree (Prunus avium, Sorbus sp., Fraxinus sp., …) species, in public or private property. To apply this method is necessary: Specific training and care of technicians and workers from tree marker to logging Specific training of people involved in the control of the forest utilization. · From an economic and productive point of view: decreasing the management costs reduction of rotation time increasing of quantity and quality of assortments production of high-quality timber relatively quickly enhancement of phenotypes and / or species potentially able to produce quality timber - From an ecological and environmental point of view: increase of individual and stand stability increase of biodiversity increase of structural complexity maintenance of an irregular canopy cover protection of sporadic species - From a social point of view: integration with the traditional forestry increase of non-wood products increase of landscape value

Abstrakt

It is a handbook on the practicability of forest plots. The machines work all year round in the forest and sometimes in unfavourable weather conditions. With an average cutting period of 6 to 10 years, soils have little time to recover in the event of major impacts. Soil compaction and rutting can cause productivity losses on the nearest trees. The handbook aims to give recommendations at each stage of the forest site and for each actor in the mobilisation of wood.

The guide aims to improve the quality of forest sites and consequently to make wood cutting more acceptable to the general public.

The handbook contains 23 recommendations throughout the wood mobilisation chain: during forest management, before the forest site, during the site, after the site and in the company. For example, it indicates to the owners the good practices to adopt to avoid a too important impact of the ground during the building site, like knowing the feasibility of the grounds, the elements of the ground, and the sensitive zones.

Abstrakt

Groupama Forêts Assurances is a solidarity and responsible mutual insurance company specialising in forest insurance.
Since the 1960s, the mutual has been investing in the purchase of real estate in Bordeaux. It was able to compensate silviculturists following the storms.  
Since 2017, the State has decided to stop helping foresters to restore their forests after a storm has passed. It is necessary to promote forest insurance as one of the first acts of sustainable management in order to provide financial resources to restore the forest after a disaster and to secure the heritage.
Their objective today is to extend forest insurance to any forest owner with a sustainable management document.

 - securing forest investment
- propose a complement to preventive action (fire)
- allow reforestation after a disaster
- contribute to the harmonisation of sustainable management criteria in Europe
- better guarantee of producing wood in the future in the face of storm and fire risks.

The contracts apply to fire, storm and civil liability risks in the forest.
Guarantee levels are in several forms:
- flat-rate compensation for the reconstitution per hectare, which ranges from €500/ha to €5,000/ha depending on the type of stand and the region
- fixed compensation for the reconstitution and in addition compensation for the value of the damaged wood (100€/ha/year for the first 15 years or 150€/ha/year for the first 20 years).
The packages are adapted according to the species and the forest and therefore applies to all forests in France.
To date, only 5% of forest owners are insured; however, the level of risks in the forest is constantly rising.
The European participation envisaged for the future would reduce the cost of contributions and thus allow all owners to have access to insurance. To do this, needs must be assessed on the basis of a sample of European countries and European insurance models must be adaptable to each Member State.

Abstrakt

Xyloforest is a research, innovation and service platform for cultivated forest systems, products and materials. Its objective is to contribute to the adaptation of forest resources to climate change. Its scientific objective is to improve knowledge and implement innovative solutions to increase the use of wood in construction, improve wood quality and develop green chemistry. The scope covers the entire forest-wood chain: Xylomic: genomics and tree phenotyping Xylobiotech: forest biotechnologies Xylosylve: innovative silvicultural systems Xyloplate: advanced wood engineering Xylomat: Composite wood-based products and biosourced materials Xylochem: Wood chemistry and bio-refinery Xyloforest developed in 2011 following the call for projects “Equipement d'Excellence” of the future investment program (ANR-10-EQPX-16). The project is scheduled to end in 2020, and the grant received for its entire duration is €10.2 million. The aid is distributed among the various partners for the purchase of equipment. Each technical platform has a laboratory with specific equipment to host new collaborative projects. Laboratories can provide the scientific community with premises, or data and host measurement and experimental equipment. They can also contribute their experience for product and service developments (e.g. STRADIVERNIS project for the development of an industrial varnish based on rosin and vegetable oil from the Xylomat platform). The XYLOFOREST platform is a support for teaching on forests and wood with more than 130 students trained, including 57 doctoral students since 2013.

Abstrakt

The objective of the project is to provide a set of tools adapted to the needs of very small forestry and logging companies. ForLog is a forest site management software connected to a remote database accessible via the web. The software allows structured messages to be sent to field teams (mission orders) and customers (sales slips). A mobile application on a smartphone allows to enter data concerning construction site activities. The service offer is proposed to companies in the form of a subscription.

It is an innovative solution to improve the quality of silviculture and forestry operations accessible to very small, poorly computerized companies, and a solution that enhances the possibilities offered by the web, mobile Internet, computerized mapping.

All operations concerning the commercial (estimates, invoices), administrative (site declarations), operational (site maps, digitisation of exchanges between operators and site managers) and financial (site balance sheets) management of the sites are proposed by ForLog, which is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) adapted to the organisation of very small forest companies. The objective of the tool is to limit the time spent on site management and improve the economic performance of forest companies. User feedback highlights:
- Easy handling of the tool;
- Time saved during administrative tasks;
- Ability to quickly access summary data on team activities (working hours, productivity, progress);
- Significant savings in travel time to access construction sites and locate boundaries;
- Improvement of the company's image towards its partners.

Abstrakt

Finland has a lot of peatland and other areas with soft terrain. The challenge is that the soft terrain does not enable harvesting in the summertime.

The stability of the harvester comes from its eight wheels and active stabilization system. The patented stabilization system is based on detecting the crane direction and position, on the basis of which the rear frame is pressed in the working direction. Pressing the rear wheels against the ground and the weight of the rear frame improve the machine’s stability significantly when working on the side of the machine – also when the machine is moving.

The Cabin leveling, balances the cabin, also in difficult terrain. The frame of the machine consists of three parts linked by rotating joints. The cabin is located in the middle frame, which is kept hydraulically balanced, while the front and rear frames tilt according to the terrain.

Scorpion King is a three-frame harvester equipped with a fork boom. Its balancing keeps the cabin horizontal in all conditions. In addition, visibility from the cabin is perfect thanks to large glass surfaces and as the crane does not block the view in any direction.
